THE RIME OF THE ANCYENT MARINERE-6

THE RIME OF THE ANCYENT MARINERE-6

"What is the Ocean doing?"
"O let me be awake, my God!
Doth close behind him tread.
Till rising from the same
The dead men stood together.
"Still as a Slave before his Lord,
For a charnel-dungeon ?tter:
All stood together on the deck,
Twas night, calm night, the moon was high;
The rock shone bright, the kirk no less
"She looketh down on him."
With silent pace, each to his place,
VI.
Yet it felt like a welcoming.
I saw a third--I heard his voice:
The moonlight steepd in silentness
FIRST VOICE.
In crimson colours came.
"For slow and slow that ship will go,
As in a gentle weather:
Each corse lay ?at, lifeless and ?at;
On every corse there stood.
No voice did they impart九_九_藏_書--
Like a meadow-gale of spring--
Hell shrieve my soul, hell wash away
"Withouten wave or wind?"
FIRST VOICE.
And by the holy rood,
A torch thats borne upright.
It was a heavenly sight:
And each right-arm burnt like a torch,
"And closes from behind.
And the bay was white with silent light,
Eftsones I heard the dash of oars,
"Or we shall be belated:
There was no breeze upon the bay,
Sweetly, sweetly blew the breeze--
So smoothly it was strewn!
That he makes in the wood.
I heard the pilots cheer:
In ripple or in shade.
Was red as in a glare.
"Up to the moon is cast--
He singeth loud his godly hymns
SECOND VOICE.
"Fly, brother, ?y! more high, more high,
Because he kn九_九_藏_書ows, a frightful ?end
The Albatrosss blood.
On me alone it blew.
Dear Lord in Heaven! it was a joy,
A man all light, a seraph-man,
The moonlight bay was white all oer,
Forth looking as before.
I lookd far-forth, but little saw
Yet she saild softly too:
The bodies rose anew:
Swiftly, swiftly ?ew the ship,
And in its time the spell was snapt,
My head was turnd perforce away
Like music on my heart.
Till rising from the same,
Is this the Hill? Is this the Kirk?
I prayd and turnd my head away
They held them strait and tight;
SECOND VOICE.
"See, brother, see! how graciously
The light-house top I see?
That in the moon did glitter.
The bodies had advancd, and now
"His great bright eye most silen九九藏書tly
It raisd my hair, it fannd my cheek,
And on the bay the moon light lay,
And I with sobs did pray--
On me alone it blew.
And the shadow of the moon.
Doth walk in fear and dread,
Is this mine own countree?
"When the Marineres trance is abated."
"For she guides him smooth or grim.
And I could move my een:
Ne sound ne motion made:
I turnd my head in fear and dread,
And I saw a boat appear.
No wave against the shore.
A little distance from the prow
Ne turn them up to pray.
This seraph-band, each wavd his hand:
Before the mast they stood.
But soon there breathd a wind on me,
Those dark-red shadows were;
"Thy soft response renewing--
"If he may know which way to go,
They lifted up九-九-藏-書 their stiff right arms,
Like as of torches came.
The pilot, and the pilots boy
Full many shapes, that shadows were,
We drifted oer the Harbour-bar,
A little distance from the prow
The dead men could not blast.
O dream of joy! is this indeed
Each one a lovely light:
The steady weathercock.
"But tell me, tell me! speak again,
The pang, the curse, with which they died,
Those crimson shadows were:
It is the Hermit good!
And having once turnd round, walks on
I could not draw my een from theirs
This seraph-band, each wavd his hand,
"The air is cut away before,
Like one, that on a lonely road
The harbour-bay was clear as glass,
I woke, and we were sailing on
But soon I saw that my own ?esh
Their stony九_九_藏_書 eye-balls glitterd on
That stands above the rock:
O Christ! what saw I there?
And turns no more his head:
And by the Holy rood
Its path was not upon the sea
No voice; but O! the silence sank,
All ?xd on me their stony eyes
"What makes that ship drive on so fast?
Had never passd away:
"But why drives on that ship so fast
Of what might else be seen.
They stood as signals to the land,
"The Ocean hath no blast:
"Or let me sleep alway!"
I turnd my eyes upon the deck--
Full many shapes, that shadows were,
Then vanishd all the lovely lights;
I heard them coming fast:
It mingled strangely with my fears,
Came back the ghastly crew.
In the red and smoky light.
The wind, that shade nor motion made,
