As this place testifies, and this dire change [ 625 ]
Space may produce new Worlds; whereof so rife [ 650 ]
Intended to create, and therein plant
For this Infernal Pit shall never hold
For mee be witness all the Host of Heavn, [ 635 ]
For who can yet beleeve, though after loss,
What force effected not: that he no less

O Myriads of immortal Spirits, O Powers
There went a fame in Heavn that he ere long
Thrice he assayd, and thrice in spight of scorn,
Should favour equal to the Sons of Heaven:
Words interwove with sighs found out thir way.
Hateful to utter: but what power of mind

Was not inglorious, though th event was dire,
Thither, if but to pry, shall be perhaps
Monarch in Heavn, till then as one secure
By me, have lost our hopes. But he who reigns

Sat on his Throne, upheld by old repute,
Long under darkness cover. But these thoughts
Our first eruption, thither or elsewhere: [ 655 ]
Which tempted our attempt, and wrought our fall.
Open or understood must be resolvd.
Henceforth his might we know, and know our own
Self-raisd, and repossess thir na

A generation, whom his choice regard
Matchless, but with th Almighty, and that strife
That all these puissant Legions, whose exile
Of knowledge past or present, could have feard,
For who can think Submission? Warr then, Warr
How such united force of Gods, how such
Foreseeing or presaging, from the Depth
Tears such as Angels weｒeａd•99csw•ｃoｍep, burst forth: at last [ 620 ]
As stood like these, could ever know repulse? [ 630 ]
If counsels different, or danger shund
To work in close design, by fraud or guile
At length from us may find, who overcomes
Put forth at full, but still his strength conceald,
So as not either to provoke, or dread
Hath emptied Heavn, shall fail to re-ascend
