說明：這本書是卡爾維諾第二本譯成英語的小說集，除了一篇《阿根廷螞蟻》選自1952年的Botteghe Oscare X以外，其他短篇都包括在1949年Einaudi出版的Ultimo Viene il Corvo（最後飛來的是烏鴉）。小說集的內容主要是二戰期間及戰後的普通義大利人的生活，以及戰爭故事，和他的上一部小說《通往蜘蛛巢的小路》之間有延續性。在寫作手法上，仍以現實主義為主，但在其中已經充分表現出卡爾維諾後來的一些重要特點，比如靈巧緊湊的結構，富有趣味的情節，簡潔生動的語言。
